Summer 2021: How to Stay Safe While Having Fun in the Sun

With COVID-19 vaccinations now more widely available across the country, the U.S. is gearing up for the summer months. Although we’re getting closer to putting the pandemic behind us, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) still recommends using caution during the warmer months ahead. But that doesn’t mean that summer needs to be any less fun. There are countless ways to have an active, exciting summer while still staying safe.

Some key things to keep in mind when making your summer plans:

  • Outdoor options are still the safer option due to increased airflow
  • Masking is recommended when inside or within 6 feet of others
  • Be sure to adhere to posted mask regulations when in public
  • Road trips will be safer than air travel for your summer vacation
  • Even if you’re vaccinated, all of the above precautions should still be taken!

As always, be sure to check the CDC guidelines regularly for any changes or updated safety recommendations. Now, here are some of our top picks for summer 2021!

Hit the Trails

An easy way to get moving outdoors is by utilizing nearby paths. This can be as simple as a 10-minute stroll on your community sidewalk or something as intense as an hours-long trek through the woods. And there’s no limit to the options available. You can also run or bike certain trails depending on your desired activity level. It’s already right outside your door, but you can also make it a day trip by visiting popular trail systems in a neighboring county or even state.

Plan a Day on the Water

There’s nothing more refreshing than spending time on the water during a hot day. Rent a kayak and go paddling. Borrow a boat and take it fishing. And of course, you have high-energy options like jet skiing, tubing, and surfing if you’re feeling extra adventurous. Whatever you choose, be sure to pack some extra sunscreen!

Cheer on Your Team

With sports picking back up, many teams are welcoming their fans back with limited stadium seating. Because only a small portion of the seats are available, you may have some extra competition to get tickets. But once you get there, it will all be worth it to watch your favorite players safely distanced from the other fans.

Practice Your Swing

Golfing is a great option for casual outdoor recreation with friends. Over a full 18-hole course, you’ll get plenty of steps in and have more than enough room to properly distance. So go ahead and hit the links at any of the many well-regarded local golf courses. It will feel good to get back into the swing of things with a competitive morning or afternoon on the course.

Pack a Quick Picnic

Sometimes all you need are the simple pleasures in life, like some fresh air and your favorite foods. Picnics don’t have to be a five-course meal packed in a basket. They can be as simple as grabbing an old beach towel and a bag of your favorite chips. Regardless of how much effort you put into your picnic, you’re sure to have a relaxing experience.
