Transported From Patient to Caregiver: Warren Welles’ Inspiring Story

In March 2023, Warren Welles underwent surgery at a different Maryland hospital. Although the surgery went well, complications soon followed, leading Warren to seek further medical attention. A Waldorf resident, Warren soon found himself at University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center several times between April and July 2023, including two critical stays in the ICU.

Despite the severity of his condition, Warren’s experience at UM Charles Regional was transformative. The hospital staff’s dedication and compassion left a lasting impression on him. Doctors and nurses provided expert care and the entire team — from the cleaning crew to the kitchen staff — treated him with respect and kindness, making his hospital stays as comfortable as possible.

“I was in bad shape,” Warren recalled, “but the treatment I received at Charles Regional was unbelievable. Everyone was polite and treated me with respect. The staff made me feel great, and that’s something you don’t always find in health care spaces.”

Warren’s connection with the hospital grew stronger during his recovery. After a particularly challenging episode, he insisted on being taken to UM Charles Regional, even though another hospital was closer to his home. The exceptional care he received motivated him to become part of the team that had nursed him back to health.

“I told my wife, ‘I want to be a part of that staff. They treated me so good, and I really want to give back,'” Warren said. Despite being a successful business owner with multiple ventures, Warren felt a calling to join UM Charles Regional. His wife initially found the idea surprising, but Warren’s determination was unwavering.

In his role as Radiology Transporter, Warren’s primary responsibility is transporting patients throughout the hospital for various procedures. He often goes beyond his duties, offering words of encouragement and reassurance to patients, drawing from his own experiences.

“I love to encourage those I transport, letting them know that the staff will take good care of them and that everything will be okay,” Warren said. His dedication and positive attitude significantly impact patients and staff at the community hospital. His journey from a critically ill patient to a valued team member is a testament to the hospital’s exceptional care and community-focused approach.

“I am honored to be part of Charles Regional. To be a part of the hospital really makes me feel good. It really does because I know I can make a difference in somebody’s experience,” Warren said.

His story exemplifies the hospital’s commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care and highlights the profound impact that dedicated health care professionals can have on individuals’ lives.
