Breast Cancer Awareness Month is About Taking Action

One in eight. That’s how many American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, according to National Breast Cancer Foundation.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. More than so many pink ribbons, it’s an opportunity to learn about this deadly disease. It’s a reminder to educate yourself about the risks and to remember to get early screenings.

The University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center is proud to offer screening and diagnostic digital mammography to the women of Southern Maryland.  Schedule your mammogram today by calling 301-609-4413.

Among the many benefits of digital mammography:

  • Approximately 22 percent less radiation than traditional mammography
  • More precise, clear image
  • Digital images are quickly and easily sent to your physician or specialist

Another great way to stay informed is attending our 8th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon on Thursday, October 23, at the Richard R. Clark Senior Center in La Plata. The catered event begins at 11 a.m. and will be led by guest speakers Dr. Eleanor Faherty, a breast surgeon with UM Charles Regional Surgical Care, and Dr. Erica Contreras of UM Charles Regional OB/GYN.

They’ll discuss breast and ovarian cancer screenings, while sharing information about the BRCA gene, genetic testing and knowing your cancer risk. Registration is required by October 16. Reserve your spot by calling 301-934-5423.

Classes for Moms-to-Be at UM Charles Regional

When you’re pregnant, especially first time moms, there are just so many questions. Is my baby healthy? When are they due? Is it a boy or a girl? What can I eat? What can’t I eat? Should I work out? How much weight will I gain? How do I choose a pediatrician or a nursery theme or a name? The list goes on and on and on.

At UM Charles Regional we understand that very often these questions produce anxiety and we want to eliminate as much of that anxiety as possible! That’s why we’ve created a curriculum of classes designed especially for expectant mommies-to-be.

Childbirth Classes

Pre-Registration: Required

Cost: $85

Class Schedule – register early, as classes fill up quickly!

The childbirth class is designed to provide the expectant mom and support person with a comprehensive understanding of the birthing experience at UM Charles Regional. While all births and babies are unique, there are many similarities that most moms/babies experience and our instructors will cover those commonly asked about topics:

  • Breathing & Relaxation Techniques

  • Comfort Measures

  • Medications

  • Hospital Procedures

  • Stages of Labor

  • Vaginal/Cesarean Deliveries

  • After Care for Both Mom & Infant

Depending upon the instructor, various teaching methods are used, but most often the course is a combination of lecture, video, and hands on training. A tour of the Family Birthing Center is included, so you and your support person will know exactly what to do and where to go on the big day!

Lunch is provided for Saturday classes and instructors ask that you bring a blanket and two pillows for the course.

Maternity Tours

Pre-Registration: Required

Cost: Free

Schedule of Tours

Perhaps you’re new to the area, but a veteran at having babies, the free maternity tour at Charles Regional is a fantastic option for you. This is a way of familiarizing yourself and your support person with the hospital’s Family Birthing Center, without having to enroll in the Childbirth Class, which you may have already learned during your first pregnancy, or nursing school, or whatever your reason may be. In addition to touring the center, you’ll view the delivery and postpartum rooms, as well as meet the hospital staff and have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about delivering at UM Charles Regional.

A reminder to all expectant moms to sign up soon, as both the class and the tours fill up quickly. We look forward to seeing you and your baby bump in the near future!

Digital Mammography Leads the Fight Against Breast Cancer

It’s October now and everything is turning pink.

We see this more each year as the nation turns its attention to fighting breast cancer. And while all the new and elaborate campaigns to raise awareness are needed and very much welcomed, one of the most important things you can do to combat breast cancer is really quite simple: Get your mammogram.

The University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center is proud to offer screening and diagnostic digital mammography to the women of Southern Maryland.

Among the many benefits of digital mammography:

  • Approximately 22 percent less radiation than traditional film mammograms
  • A more precise, clear image for the radiologist
  • No need for repeat studies because of film-processing errors
  • Faster visit since you don’t have to wait for film to develop
  • Digital images quickly and easily sent to your physician or specialist

But perhaps the most reassuring benefit is all of the personal care and more than 50 years of combined mammography experience of our certified mammography technologist’s at UM Charles Regional. We strive to keep our patients comfortable and fully informed each step of the way.

It’s October now. What better way to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month than by scheduling your mammogram at UM Charles Regional. Call us today at 301-609-4413 to make your appointment.

Let’s win this fight.
