How We’re Making Our Nationally Recognized Labor and Delivery Care Even Better

Last month, UM Charles Regional Medical Center was named one of the best maternity care hospitals in America. Our hospital was measured against standards for excellence in a broad series of categories relating to maternity care. From there, The Leapfrog Group partnered with Newsweek to compare the results with other hospitals across the country.

We were one of just three hospitals in Maryland to earn this prestigious designation — further illustrating our commitment to providing exceptional care in our community. But rather than resting on our laurels, we’re using this award as motivation to make our labor and delivery care even better. Here’s how:

Expanding Our Commitment to Mothers and Their Newborn Babies

We’ve entered into a partnership with OB Hospitalist Group (OBHG), the leading provider of hospitalists for obstetrician programs. Through this partnership, our team will be able to ensure that mothers and their newborn babies will have round-the-clock, immediate care from a certified physician. Previously, we were only able to offer on-call care from physicians.

The Benefits of Our Program Enhancement

Even as a highly rated labor and delivery location, we know there’s always more that can be done to ensure parents and their newborns are able to receive the highest level of care. And our new partnership with OBHG is a clear improvement to our already award-winning program.

“This new model of obstetrical care combines the prenatal management expertise of our office-based providers with the delivery skills and experience of obstetrical hospitalists,” Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joseph Moser said. “We have put together a top-notch team of OB physicians to complement the care our patients are receiving from our office providers.”

Through this partnership, providers and staff with UM Charles Regional Medical Group will continue to provide patients with expert care during prenatal visits. Then, when it’s time to deliver a baby — at any hour, day or night — the hospitalist and staff in our labor and delivery center will provide comprehensive care for maternity patients.

Of course, prenatal providers and hospitalists will regularly share information on how a patient’s pregnancy is progressing. The hospital team will have ongoing access to a patient‘s medical records and the individual, personalized care plan developed by providers. Beginning immediately and in the days and weeks ahead, office care providers will communicate, collaborate, and partner with our hospitalist physicians to provide a seamless, cohesive team dedicated to high-quality medical care for mothers and their babies.

This step represents a significant investment in improving the already high standards of care we seek to provide all of our patients. And even though we’ve been recognized on a national level for our maternity care, we will continue building on that recognition to provide outstanding, attentive, professional, and compassionate care throughout expectant mothers’ pregnancies.
